Create an Audience
From SharePoint Knowledge Base
Audiences are dynamically created groups of users who match a defined set of criteria. For example, you can create an Audience consisting of all users in a certain geographical region. Or, you could create an audience of all users with a first name of "Dave". Obviously that would be very compelling.
Here are the steps to create a new audience.
- Open SharePoint Central Administration
- Navigate to your Shared Services Provider administration page
- Under the Audiences section, click Audiences
- On the Manage Audiences page, click Create audience
- Enter a Name for the audience - make it something descriptive like "North America Employees" or "All of the Daves"
- In the Owner field, enter the name of the user who will be the point of contact for this audience
- For the Include users who radio buttons, choose the appropriate value. If you choose Satisfy all of the rules, then only users who match ALL rules you define (next step) will be included. If you choose Satisfy any of the rules, then the audience will include users who match any one rule, but not necessarily other rules.
- On the Add Audience Rule page, create the first rule for your audience. You can create more rules later, this page just allows you to create the first of your rules. As an example, if you wanted to create a rule consisting of users who belong to a certain Distribution List, do the following:
- Select the User radio button
- Under Operator drop down list, select Member Of
- In the Value text box, enter the name of the distribution list. Click the check-mark icon to confirm that the distribution list exists and can be found by SharePoint
- Click OK
- You are now viewing the Audience Properties page. From here you can see the audience status, add more rules, and change settings. The first thing you must do is compile your audience. Click the Compile audience link.
- Once the page refreshes you should now see how many users were found for your audience and whether or not there were any errors
- Your audience is now complete and ready to use. It will automatically be updated on a regular basis to include new users or remove users who no longer match your rules.
